PLANTASIA is a collection of twelve vivid watercolour paintings that explores intimate views of nature and gardens that boldly captures the transcendent romantic touch of plants, gardens, and the natural world.
Each painting makes you feel like you are pushing back leaves to take a closer look into the world of plants.
You can feel the Heliconia rostrata touching your head from above, the leaves of the lemon tree brushing your arms as you see a bee sampling a blossom, and your hands lifting the leaves away to look more closely at the gentian. Experience glass houses and flowers intimately at their most illustrious, spectacular, and glorious.

The Plantasia Collection: “Beckoning" Print
“Beckoning” is a watercolour painting that beckons you into the dense verdant foliage of Kew Gardens Palm House to get lost, curious, enticed, and overwhelmed.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House.
Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to paint all of the dense foliage. I wanted to paint an image that was incredibly dense and gave a real sense of the speciality of the Palm House and just how verdant it is. It took me three months to complete this painting, which is twice as much time as it usually takes me to complete a work.

The Plantasia Collection: "Summertide" Print
“Summertide” looks at a close-up of a busy bee going from flower to flower on a lemon tree in London’s Chelsea Physic Garden.
It was the end of June in 2018 when I went to the Chelsea Physic Garden, the sky was blue and the day was quickly becoming hot. In the garden there was a lemon tree laden with fruit. I started taking pictures to capture the citrus’ magnificence.
Then I noticed a bee going through the tree, it was visiting the lemon blossoms. I tried to capture that perfect moment with my camera - the bee on a lemon blossom.
When it came time to paint this image, I was excited of what I had managed to do with my camera. I feel like this image captures a magnitude with its minutia. A bee collecting pollen is quite small, magnifying what we rarely see.
Dramatically lit, this painting has a dark background of dense foliage. In the foreground is the vividly illuminated honey bee gathering pollen from a lemon blossom. Up close you can see the hairs on the bees body and the pollen that fills the baskets on her legs.

The Plantasia Collection: “Chiffon Roses" Print
“Chiffon Roses” depicts a gossamer froth of apricot coloured rambling roses. Roses are known as the Queen of Flowers, and are native to the northern hemisphere.
These roses were in the garden at Hinton Ampner, a National Trust Sight in England. There is something spellbinding about how the rose leaves in this composition. Between the stems and leaves are ruffled roses, which are typically the focus of a flower painting. But here the leaves are painted as a main feature. They are every colour and shape, looking towards the viewer and turning away.

“Gentianeae” is a watercolour portrait featuring an intimate look in on a cluster of azure blue gentian.
I’ve had Gentian in my garden for years. It is a low lying alpine plant with blue bell-shaped flowers. I loved this image showcasing the flowers at their best with the plants leaves completely blurred in the foreground and background.

The Plantasia Collection: “Heliconia Lustre" Print
“Heliconia Lustre” is inspired by the Heliconia rostrata, the South American hanging lobster claw plants, in Kew’s Palm House. In the wild, the plants radiant red bracts, from each its flowers bloom, attract pollinators from under the rainforest’s canopy.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House.
Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
Walking down the pathways of the Palm house was breathtaking. When I was walking under a tunnel of blooming Heliconia rostrata, elegantly leaning over to envelop the visitors, I knew I had to capture its beauty with my camera for a future painting.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to capture the ruffled leaves and the accentuated lighting when it came time paint this watercolour. As well as the glistening leaves with their wax-like texture and ruby red lobster claws that were transcendent.
Dramatically lit, this painting has a strong ray of white light coming in from above, highlighting the tops of the heliconia’s verdant flounced leaves. In the background there are plants and the glass houses pathway caught between the spaces of the heliconia leaves which add atmospheric interest to the piece.
May this piece transport you to a wistful walk through a glasshouse in your home.

The Plantasia Collection: “Luminous"
“Luminous” illuminates the verdant underside canopy of large fanning palm leaves in Kew’s Palm House.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House. Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
Looking up under the canopy of all of the tropical plants was electrifying, being under the the umbrella of this palm tree was like being cocooned.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to paint the central fan-like palm leaves from al of their different angles. As well as the glowing light from the glass houses windows up above, and the company of all the other plants overlapping in the background.

“Radiance” enraptures and overwhelms you as you look up at fanning Pritchardia kaalae palm tree in Kew’s Garden Palm House.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House.
Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
Looking up under the canopy of all of the tropical plants was electrifying, namely being under the canopy of this Pritchardia kaalae palm tree. The lacy seed pods, the glowing light from the glass houses windows up above, the noise of all the other plants overlapping in the background, and the vibrant green. A worthy sight to see.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to paint all of the different textures going on; the smooth stems, the woody trunk, the glistening leaves.
Spectacularly lit, this painting has strong white light coming in from above, illuminating everything. In the background there are leaves of other palm trees, vines, and a column and arch of the glass house. With our subject matter, a Pritchardia kaalae palm tree, front and centre illustrating all of the elements of this tree.

The Plantasia Collection: “Bromeliaceae" Print
“Bromeliaceae” is a watercolour portrait portraying a vivid cluster of bromeliads, nestles among rocks/ (Niduliarium fulgen variety) in Kew Garden’s Princess of Wales Conservatory.
Bromeliads are fascinating. They store water in their central cup, to ensure the plant has its own steady water supply when it grows in trees in the wild. Because of this the stored water can provide life support for living creatures such as tadpoles of tree frogs and insects.
I loved the vivid glow of this plant. As well as the fuchsia core of the central flower and the electric green petals.

“Rapture” depicts a kaleidoscope of colours that brings to life a very intimate view of radiant crabapple blossoms that are on the verge of bursting open.
Pink crabapple blossoms have always been my favourite. I remember picking basketfuls of blossoms, as a kid from the tree in the backyard, and being obsessed by their beauty. Then in university I started photographing that tree annually. Wanting to capture and preserve their beauty. So that I could remember how pretty they were months later.
With albums full of just photos of pink blossoms I knew I must paint them someday. I was excited to paint the blossoms when they are their pinkest, just before the buds burst open. It was a motley of colours and textures.

The Plantasia Collection: “Love Birds" 12x16
“Love Birds” depicts two emerald doves (Chalcophaps indica) through a blur of mist, nestled together at the centre of Waddesdon Manor’s Aviary.
Waddesdon Manor’s aviary was built in 1889, to follow the Victorian aristocratic trend of housing exotic birds in England. At the aviary I was looking to see all of the different types of birds inside and everything there was a twitter. But through the leaves I could see this calm pair of colourful doves demurely cuddled up together caught my heart and I affectionately regarded them as the Love Birds.

“Love Birds” depicts two emerald doves (Chalcophaps indica) through a blur of mist, nestled together at the centre of Waddesdon Manor’s Aviary.
Waddesdon Manor’s aviary was built in 1889, to follow the Victorian aristocratic trend of housing exotic birds in England. At the aviary I was looking to see all of the different types of birds inside and everything there was a twitter. But through the leaves I could see this calm pair of colourful doves demurely cuddled up together caught my heart and I affectionately regarded them as the Love Birds.

The Plantasia Collection: “Luminous" 12x16
“Luminous” illuminates the verdant underside canopy of large fanning palm leaves in Kew’s Palm House.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House. Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
Looking up under the canopy of all of the tropical plants was electrifying, being under the the umbrella of this palm tree was like being cocooned.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to paint the central fan-like palm leaves from al of their different angles. As well as the glowing light from the glass houses windows up above, and the company of all the other plants overlapping in the background.
I hope that this piece entices you to imagine yourself enveloped in a palm leaf in your own home.
This piece makes a wonderful diptych when paired with my “Radiance” painting, which I worked on simultaneously with “Luminous”. Together they sing and balance each other.

“Gentianeae” is a watercolour portrait featuring an intimate look in on a cluster of azure blue gentian.
I’ve had Gentian in my garden for years. It is a low lying alpine plant with blue bell-shaped flowers. I loved this image showcasing the flowers at their best with the plants leaves completely blurred in the foreground and background.

The Plantasia Collection: “Chiffon Roses" 12x16
“Chiffon Roses” depicts a gossamer froth of apricot coloured rambling roses. Roses are known as the Queen of Flowers, and are native to the northern hemisphere.
These roses were in the garden at Hinton Ampner, a National Trust Sight in England. There is something spellbinding about how the rose leaves in this composition. Between the stems and leaves are ruffled roses, which are typically the focus of a flower painting. But here the leaves are painted as a main feature. They are every colour and shape, looking towards the viewer and turning away.

“Beckoning” is a watercolour painting that beckons you into the dense verdant foliage of Kew Gardens Palm House to get lost, curious, enticed, and overwhelmed.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House.
Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to paint all of the dense foliage. I wanted to paint an image that was incredibly dense and gave a real sense of the speciality of the Palm House and just how verdant it is. It took me three months to complete this painting, which is twice as much time as it usually takes me to complete a work.

The Plantasia Collection: “Heliconia Lustre" 16x12
“Heliconia Lustre” is inspired by the Heliconia rostrata, the South American hanging lobster claw plants, in Kew’s Palm House. In the wild, the plants radiant red bracts, from each its flowers bloom, attracting pollinators from under the rainforest’s canopy.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
Walking down the pathways of the Palm house was breathtaking. When I was walking under a tunnel of blooming Heliconia rostrata, elegantly leaning over to envelop the visitors, I knew I had to capture its beauty with my camera for a future painting.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to capture the ruffled leaves and the accentuated lighting. As well as the glistening leaves with their wax-like texture and ruby red lobster claws that were transcendent.
Dramatically lit, this painting has a strong ray of white light coming in from above, highlighting the tops of the heliconia’s verdant flounced leaves. In the background there are plants and the glass houses pathway caught between the spaces of the heliconia leaves which add atmospheric interest to the piece.
May this piece transport you to a wistful walk through a glasshouse in your home.
This piece makes a wonderful diptych when paired with my “Summertide” painting, which I worked on simultaneously with “Heliconia Lustre”. Together they sing and balance each other.

The Plantasia Collection: "Summertide" 16 × 12
“Summertide” looks at a close-up of a busy bee going from flower to flower on a lemon tree in London’s Chelsea Physic Garden.
When I went to the Chelsea Physic Garden, the sky was blue and the day was quickly becoming hot. In the garden there was a lemon tree laden with fruit. I started taking pictures to capture the citrus’ magnificence.
Then I noticed a bee going through the tree and I tried to capture that perfect moment with my camera - the bee on a lemon blossom.
Dramatically lit, this painting has a dark background of dense foliage. In the foreground is the vividly illuminated honey bee gathering pollen from a lemon blossom. Up close you can see the hairs on the bees body and the pollen that fills the baskets on her legs.

“Radiance” enraptures and overwhelms you as you look up at fanning Pritchardia kaalae palm tree in Kew’s Garden Palm House.
I spent the whole day at Kew Garden’s and the Palm House holds my heart to this day, and I am still doing paintings to capture the glory of Kew’s Palm House. Housing tropical and sub-tropical plants from the depths of the rainforest, around every corner I was stunned by magnificent grand plants. With the morning light pouring through the windows, and the mist heavy in the air.
Looking up under the canopy of all of the tropical plants was electrifying, namely being under the canopy of this Pritchardia kaalae palm tree. The lacy seed pods, the glowing light from the glass houses windows up above, the noise of all the other plants overlapping in the background, and the vibrant green. A worthy sight to see.
When it came time to paint this image, I was very excited to paint all of the different textures going on; the smooth stems, the woody trunk, the glistening leaves.
Spectacularly lit, this painting has strong white light coming in from above, illuminating everything. In the background there are leaves of other palm trees, vines, and a column and arch of the glass house. With our subject matter, a Pritchardia kaalae palm tree, front and centre illustrating all of the elements of this tree.
