ABOUT

I live and work in the heart of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Here I explore the city's lovely green spaces, with its open sky prairies to the east and the mountains on its western horizon.

It is delightful to be surrounded by plants and foliage so I love to tend to my garden. Growing vegetables and flowers nourishes my creative process - teaching me about the world of plants. This helps me to frame their magic in my watercolour paintings.

My intent is to capture the resplendence of plants and gardens and their ability to lift spirits. I like to spotlight natural places to wander and sights of wonder. Through my watercolour paintings I extend the experience of biophilia - the innate affinity humans have with the natural world - and a sense of the Sublime which is that quality of greatness beyond any calculation of measurement for my collectors.

Building the watercolour image layer by layer, I take great care and time to forge all of the diminutive details, leaf by leaf, bud by bud. All this to give a sense of peering through a porthole or a magnifying glass. The feeling of awe, protection, and delicacy towards plants and nature is at the heart of all that inspires my artwork.

MY STORY

Growing up in an arts loving home, with two parents who worked in creative industries, we discussed and analyzed everything from music, movies, fashion, furniture design, and visual art. Always valuing craft and the detail of everything.

I have a memory of trying to copy watercolour illustrations out of a garden architecture book with Mum’s old watercolour palettes, with Mum reading to me aloud while I lay in a fort made of sheets on the front lawn, thinking to myself, “I hope that someday I can paint like this really well and do this for a living.”

Eventually, I pursued a degree in fine art, initially planning to major in painting. There I got my heart stolen by the plant dyes in the textile department. I always enjoyed gardening, playing with plants and watching flowers grow so to discover that there was a way to extend this magic to cloth I was totally sold and became a textile major.

At the end of my degree I was looking for something new to inspire my artwork and considering different mediums again, and I fell back into watercolour painting. I fell in love all over again and have worked passionately in the medium ever since.
